Important note: Internet Explorer 9 is not yet supported by Salesforce and there are several known issues, including one that impacts the in|force Connector. Salesforce is aware of the issue and working on a fix, but until they officially support IE9 we recommend that you use a supported browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari or IE8).
Before Starting
- You will need to be an administrator of your Salesforce Organization to perform the installation.
- Installing the in|force Connector should take about 20 minutes.
- You will need a LinkedIn account (get a free account at linkedin.com).
- You should also ensure that you’re using a Salesforce supported browser. To find supported browser information, look here.
Important note: Internet Explorer 9 is not yet supported by Salesforce and there are several known issues, including one that impacts the in|force Connector. Salesforce is aware of the issue and working on a fix, but until they officially support IE9 we recommend that you use a supported browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari or IE8).
Install the Connector
The following steps will install the in|force Connector in your Salesforce Organization.
- Navigate to the Redkite in|force Connector listing on the AppExchange, or go to appexchange.com and search for Redkite or in|force Connector.
- Click the Get It Now button on the in|force Connector listing.
- A “Get It Now” dialog box will open. Select “Yes” for both of the first two questions, and then select whether you would like to install the connector into a Salesforce sandbox or a production Salesforce instance, and then click Continue. You will then be prompted to log into Salesforce.
- After logging in, Salesforce will present a “Confirm Installation” screen. Review the details of this screen, check off the terms and conditions checkbox, and click Install. You will be asked to verify your password at this point.
- Review the Package Details and Package components and click Continue to start the installation wizard.
- You will be prompted to approve sending or receiving data from LinkedIn® as shown below. Check the checkbox to grant access and click Continue
- At step 1 of the installation wizard, approve the Package API access by clicking Next.
- Step 2 of the installation wizard asks you to choose a security level. For most organizations, we recommend that this be set to “Grant access to all users” but if you wish to set this up for certain profiles only, you can use “Select security settings” and choose which profiles to give access to. However, if you wish for only certain profiles to see the in|force Connector, we recommend that you do this by assigning different page layouts to different profiles. If you choose to limit the access to select profiles at this stage, it is not as easy to go back and add the profiles, as Salesforce does not provide the means to do this at the package level.
Any user who wishes to view LinkedIn® Profile data must have a LinkedIn® ID and password. - On the final step of the wizard, click Install to begin the package installation.
If you get an error at this stage, try repeating it with the “Ignore Apex Test Errors” box checked and it should go through. This will not impact the behavior of the Connector. - At this point, you’ll see one of two screens. If Salesforce is performing the install quickly you will see an “Install Complete” screen like the following:
Choose Deploy Now to complete the setup of the Connector.
If the install is somewhat slower to complete, which can occur during Salesforce’s peak hours of usage, you may see the following screen:
In which case, you will be sent an email when the installation completes. After you receive this email, you should navigate to Setup | App Setup | View Installed Packages, click on the “Redkite in|force Connector“ link, and click Deploy. If you do not complete this step, the connector will not work for all profiles.
- Review the components being deployed, and click the Deploy button.
Get a LinkedIn® API Key
Because LinkedIn® has limits on the number of times per day an application can make calls to its API — and this is controlled by the API key — each organization installing the in|force Connector must have its own API key. To get one:
- Go to www.linkedin.com/secure/developer. (If this link does not work, go to developer.linkedin.com, navigate to API Developers | REST and then click the “Request an API Key” link.
- You may be asked to sign in at this point — log in with your normal LinkedIn® user name and password.
- Click “Add new Application”
- Fill out the form as follows (feel free to change the details if you are comfortable with the questions):
- Check the box to agree to the Terms of Service, enter the security text and then click to generate your API key and Secret Key — save both of these keys somewhere safe.

Configure the Connector
Next, set your in|force Connector’s preferences.
- If you’re not already there, switch to the in|force Connector App via the App Menu in the top-right corner of your screen.
- In the in|force Connector Tab, enter the settings as follows:
LinkedIn API Key Your LinkedIn API Key, as generated above * LinkedIn Secret Key Your LinkedIn Secret Key, as generated above ** * You can re-enter these API keys at any time, but note that for security reasons, they will never be displayed.
- Click Save. Once the values are saved in Salesforce, the API key fields are hidden from view and the screen will appear as follows:

Add the Connector to the Contact Page Layout
The final step is to add the LinkedInProfileDetail Visualforce page to the appropriate Contact* Page Layouts.
* Note that if your organization uses Person Accounts, the in|force Connector will not work as it is designed to work on the Contact page rather than the Account page. Person Accounts will be supported in a future release — if this is important to you, please let us know. Leads are not supported either at this time, but will be added in an upcoming release.
- Navigate to Setup | App Setup | Customize | Contacts | Page Layouts, and select the appropriate Contact Page Layout Setup and click Edit.
- Select Visualforce Pages in the left-hand menu of the top section.
- Drag a new Section (from the right-hand side of the top section) down into the layout where you would like the LinkedIn® Profile to display.
- Enter the section name as LinkedIn Profile, select display on Detail Page only, select 1 Column layout, then click OK

- Drag and drop the Redkite LinkedIn Contact Profile Widget Visualforce page (from the right-hand side of the top section) into the newly created section.
- Next, configure how the Visualforce component will display within your page layout by clicking on the settings icon
at its top-right (visible when you hover your mouse over the Visualforce component). - Enter the settings as show below: a width of 100%, a height of 400 pixels and showing scrollbars if the LinkedIn® profile extends below 400.
These settings can be fine-tuned to anything that suits you, but we find that a height of 400 pixels is a good starting position for many LinkedIn® profiles
- Save the changes to the page layout.
- Repeat these steps for all Contact Page Layouts that you wish to display the LinkedIn® profile information on.
Additional Step for Internet Explorer users
There is one additional step for organizations using Internet Explorer. Because Visualforce pages are hosted on a different domain (*.force.com) than native Salesforce pages (*.salesforce.com), Internet Explorer has an issue keeping users logged into LinkedIn. To fix this:
- In Internet Explorer, select Tools | Internet Options
- Go to the Privacy tab
- Click on the “Sites…” button
- Enter “*.force.com” for the Address of website and click “Allow“
- Click “OK“
Test it Out
Congratulations! You’re all set to begin using the in|force Connector. View a contact and you will be able to search for that contact on LinkedIn® with a single click. Once you connect the contact to a LinkedIn® Profile, any user of your organization who can view this contact will be able to see the LinkedIn® Profile. Test it out and let your users know!
